IZMIR ICONS
Basmane Station
Basmane is one of the indispensable elements of urban memory. However, it needs to be remembered and discovered again. Basmane Station is the first place where those who come to Izmir from Anatolia, come across.
Basmane Station was built in 1876 by the French firm Regie Generale. The damage he suffered in the Great Izmir Fire of 1922 was repaired after the establishment of the Turkish Republic State Railways in 1926.
The central part of the station building, which is made of cut stone and has a rectangular plan, is three-storey, while the other parts are two-storey. Gar has three parts. It was built in a fiction where the middle section where the main entrance is located is raised and centralized. Writings and symbols related to the railway system are also included in this section. The top of the building is covered with a hipped roof. In the middle of the two sides, there are triangular pediments that bring dynamism to the flat facade appearance.
This historical station, which has been hosting its passengers for almost 150 years, has witnessed countless reunions and separation moments. The soldiers who went to the War of Independence and the Korean War were sent off here.
